Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is a unique library that holds the largest collection of Canadian content in the world. We collect books, magazines, musical recordings, maps and electronic books published in Canada or about Canada. The collection is searchable via our online catalogue and thousands of researchers visit our facilities to consult our holdings in person.

Building our national collection is a collaborative effort that includes the many publishers and music producers participating in the Legal Deposit program, gifts received from organizations and individuals, as well as selective purchases.

More than 20 million items are currently in LAC’s published collection and it grows every day!

We are using PlaceSpeak, a consultation website, to gather ideas from Canadians. Learn more about PlaceSpeak Privacy Policy and LAC Privacy statement.

Why We Are Engaging

We are continually evolving our collecting practices, identifying new ways to promote the collection and improve services to our clients. By engaging with Canadians, we hope to gather innovative ideas on how we can continue building the national collection and ensure that a wide range of creative Canadian voices are represented in our holdings. LAC’s holdings are as varied and diverse as Canadians. Gathering and maintaining a collection that reflects our vibrant society takes ideas from all of us. Tell us what you think! What we will do with your ideas The ideas gathered here will be considered in an ongoing manner as we revise our policies and serve Canadians.
