Overview
The Surrey Biodiversity Conservation Strategy planning process is now underway, and the City of Surrey wants your feedback.
What is the Surrey Biodiversity Conservation Strategy?
The Surrey Biodiversity Conservation Strategy (BCS) will be a policy framework that will clearly establish biodiversity goals and targets as well as conservation priorities for the City of Surrey.
The outcome will be a set of policies and regulatory tools (plans, by-laws and other regulations) that will be used to manage the City of Surrey’s biodiversity. This information will help us with updating and implementation of the Official Community Plan, the Sustainability Charter, Neighbourhood Concept Plans, and the Parks, Recreation and Culture Strategic Plan.
For additional background on the BCS, and a terms of reference for the work, visit our page on the City of Surrey BCS Website.
How will the Strategy be completed?
The Biodiversity Conservation Strategy will be developed through three main activities:
- Mapping of the current state and potential state of biodiversity across the City
- Identifying priority areas to optimize the level of biodiversity across the City
- Developing management and policy recommendations
What is the expected timeline for the Strategy?
Work on the strategy started in June of 2012 and is estimated to be complete by the Summer of 2013. The following graphic shows the key activities and anticipated timelines for this work:
A Steering Committee, consisting of key City of Surrey Staff has been created to guide the work. A Stakeholder Working Group is being formed to ensure that this strategy is developed in a way that is consistent with local values. The Stakeholder Working Group will meet four times throughout the process to provide feedback on data, analysis and findings as the work evolves.
How can I get involved and provide feedback?
We would love to hear what you’re thinking! Visit this page regularly for project updates, and to see findings as they emerge. Follow the City of Surrey on Facebook and Twitter to be notified when new documents and results are available or for event updates. There will be one Public Open House organized, likely in September, to share project information and get feedback on the Strategy. Stay tuned for more details as they evolve.
